Jay Chou is back at it again with his brand new fourteenth album titled "Bedtime Stories". Chou has had a long amazing career with numerous awards and various projects in his resume. I could only imagine what kind of style "Bedtime Stories"would contain.
You can only be excited when listening to a Jay Chou album since he is the king of producing music that never is made up on just one genre with many different genres sometimes mixing to form a style of its own. Production of the album takes rock, pop, and, country then fuses these music genres together. A song would start strong delivering beats and rocking guitars that make the body want to get in on some dance floor action. However, once you get to Jay's raps and vocals, you start to feel let down a tiny bit. There isn't any liveliness to the choruses of half of the tracks in this album. The album also started to give off this vibe of "lets see if Jay Chou can rap on almost EVERY single song in this album." Jay isn't a bad rapper but his flow isn't mind blowing either. Its like a side dish you get with the full course meal and you know it's there but you don't have to eat it. I have loved Jay's rap songs in the past but it was in moderation. He whisper raps and It can be a good or a bad thing. Chinese fans have stated in the past that a lot of the time they have no clue what Jay is rapping about because of the way he raps. Others have said they understand him just fine. At least in certain tracks his voice elevates when he raps so it doesn't sound like his voice is in a monotone straight line. I love rocker Jay Chou so tracks like "Left After Saying" are some of my personal favorites.
Jay Chou's smooth relaxing vocal grace each track respectfully. This guy has improved so much with his vocal performance. I remember listening to his earlier albums and hearing his have trouble staying on pitch. Listeners hear none of this in "Bedtime Stories". Choruses are produced to be catchy and attractive without being too vocally challenging which can be heard in "Now you See Me". then Jay takes on the challenge of stretching his vocals in tracks like "Failure At Love." Amazing female vocalist, A-mei even jumps into the action with "This Shouldn't Be". She's such a talent and Jay kept up with her in the duet, letting his voice glide into a pretty falsetto sound while A-mei just sounds beautiful without trying.
"Bedtime Stories" was one of his worse albums in my opinion. There were too many forgettable songs and not a lot of rememberable songs. Pieces of the old Jay I love is in there but not enough to change my opinion.
