Fate & Furies(운명과 분노) Korean Drama Thoughts

Directed by Jung Dong Yoon and written by Kang Cheol Woong, Fate & Fury is a 2018 to 2019 Korean drama that was the final project of SBS's Weekend drama hour. This drama was leading actor and actress: Lee Min Jung( actor Lee Byung Hun's wife) and Joo Sang Wook's second time working together since 2014's Cunning Single Lady. There's also an extended cast featuring So E-Hyun, long time actor Lee Ki Woo, Yoon Hak of Supernova, and Park Soo Young formerly of Kpop girl group After School. The drama spans twenty episodes but I've seen misinformation saying that there's forty episodes…..  I don't know where the extra episodes could be unless I missed something here.

A women who loves to create shoes joins a man in getting revenge on a wealthy couple. He wants to break the couple up because the women is the mother of his child who she left behind for fame. In order to do this, the man wants the shoe loving women to seduce the rich heir thats said to marry his ex. Old wounds sure do run deep. Lets also top that off with internal power struggles for mass destruction.

Fate and Furies goes in various directions during that story's twenty episode run. Honestly, the drama has a lot going for it, even if a plot dealing with revenge isn't the freshest in Korean drama history. Rich men coming in to rescue the poor girl also might nerve wreck the hell out of viewers if you've been an addicted K-drama watcher but Furies breaks through in the details that sets it apart from the rest. This drama could take multiple directions since the script literally starts out strong introducing characters in their problematic furies to go to a place that seems in their reach. A lot of layers get peeled back or that have to get peeled back to get to the core message. Sometimes I thought that I understood the story's direction until the next episode would shift everything to a new perspective. Not that this would be a complete bad experience if the writing was as solid as the shifts. Korean dramas tend to suffer in trying too hard to please romance lovers using extra scenes that slow down the excitement. Furies takes almost too much time trying to establish the relationship between the main couple instead of depending on their acting to get the point across in a select few scenes. One episode was mostly the two talking to each other as they get to know each other. Its just that only half of those scenes were needed craft that emotion. Most of us want to see a realistic love that grows on limited time, not borrowed time that could be used on advancing the plot which was very interesting when things got down to the point. I also wasn't too big a fan of the third couple because they brought nothing(Is being loud and bratty good traits?) to the plot outside of the connection to the main characters. They were annoying and I found myself looking at the clock when they had scenes on screen. What Fate and Furies gets applause on was the drama's ability to keep the story going just when you think things are over. The script does an awesome job of this during the last two episodes. Even if the script sort of lays the last twist in your lap before the final episode. Fate and Furies could have tighten up a few weak points to make the script writing stronger however, This drama has some magical moments that makes it a good watch. Not quite as good as Money Flower though.

The acting saves this drama at the times where the writing falls short. I mean the acting was the show during emotional moments between characters trying to find their own way. Especially So E Hyun's performance as a woman that always said what was on her mind. She a strong female character with a glare that could kill a lion. I can't say I was a big fan when some of the directors choices seemed so typical Kdrama(ish). A character dies in one scene and I called it before the death happened. I even knew how it would happen based on the stiuation. Stuff like that doesn't make me happy. All Korean dramas should strive to bring viewers something different from the typical norm. We're all much too knowledgable nowadays.

Fate and Furies is a mature drama that shows promise while lacking a solid foundation to be award winning. It has re-watch value for the reasons I mentioned above. I might even do just that latter on.

Uru - Orion Blue(オリオンブルー) Album Thoughts (J-pop/ballad)

Uru is a Japanese singer that started her career by uploading covers of popular songs from Japan on to Youtube. She was then discovered and released her first album that was met with moderate success. She then continued to realize singles used for various media outlets that boosted her career slightly intake for her sophomore album Orion Blue. Currently the album debuted in the top ten on Oricon album charts and has stayed there for a couple of weeks.

I've been having thoughts cross my mind of who the next Ayumi Hamasaki will be…. No, not that a singer will replace her but who will be that female singer who is the next in line to get to the hight that Yamasaki was at once upon a time. Uru came to mind after I discovered her music on Youtube. She and Ayumi don't have the same sound vocally, which is very apparent by their musically choices. Still, Uru comes across a seasoned ballad singer even only on her second album. Her music is for smooth easy listening where a listener really sits back to hear the lyrics. One dynamic helping this processing being the fact that she herself creates songs that are pure. Almost like a place that can't be disturbed by anything negative. I felt this way when I first started listening to Hamasaki during her Dearest and Heaven eras. Not many vocalist have that power to construct such feelings by themselves. We haven't even gotten to the production yet that she eats up whole heartily as ballad singers do. Dramatic over produced violins have always been a thing in popular music from Utada to Namie, so why should producers stop now? At least Uru does try to add a bit more selection to choose from outside of the emotional song and dance. These tracks still feel smooth to the ears. Maybe even too smooth to the point that I started to want her to sing a bit off the beaten path. Also, her ballads run together as one big track to me at times. I still enjoy Orion Blue for what was given despite the fact that this album isn't one I would listen to everyday or throughout the week.

Uru's vocals seem VERY cut and dry. They're very beautiful yet predictable. She sings so straightforward that Orion Blue has no real surprises vocally. You as the listener can appreciate the quality of her voice but thats about it. Japanese music can kinda be like that….. You sing a certain way for masses, otherwise they won't hear you. That's the vibe I get from her. Here's to hoping that she has a say in her career moves and doesn't end up running away from beng turned into an industry robot like Ayumi Hamasaki did.

Astral Chain Japanese Action RPG Game Thoughts

Astral Chain is a game exclusively for the Nintendo Switch game console. The game was created by PlatinumGames and was directed by Takahisa Taura who designed other popular games such as Devil May Cry and Nier: Automata. It has been stated that the game would have sequels since the game ended out 2019 selling over a million copies worldwide. The original production took five years to make.

In a post apocalyptic world, the police fight monsters that came to earth called Chimeras who came from a place called The Ark. Two twins who just joined the force under the direction of their father, are thrown into this war when tragedy hits close to home. More secrets surround the two than they know and maybe a trip into the place in-between called Astral Plane will have the answers they need.

The game itself has a lot going for it once you see all there is to do outside of fighting Chimeras on your missions. You can find and take care of cats, change your wardrobe, investigate, train, and even more that I can't think of at this moment. Your rest point is the police station where you get to upgrade your equipment and buy items. Some side quests also occur while interacting with people in the station on top of being able to clean your Legions as you gather them. I was never sure if not cleaning them affected them in any way but I always made sure to because they clean up a lot of corruption out in the world. When you go out on missions you have to investigate using IRIS a device that allows Police to find information using only the naked eye. It's cool to use the first few times when your out in the field until it gets old. Astral chain's fun comes from the combat that uses the L and R buttons at the top of the console or on the detachable sticks depending on what version of the Nintendo Switch you have. Players have to do a lot of button mashing as well as be quick acting in order to switch weapons and use the correct Legion depending on the enemy you're facing. The gaming experience to me will be  different depending on if you have a switch lite or the first switch because I had pain in my hands if I played Astral Chain for a long period of time. I also had a hard time controlling the game during certain mission dealing with balancing ice cream. Other than that, the game has a fun energy involving battling strategy that you won't find in any other JRPG game.

The story starts out interesting but doesn't live up to the imagery that accompanies it. One reason is the story becomes a bit too cut and dry. Even the twist was something that any player who loves stories could have figured out eventually. Many of the characters are well thought out however, I don't think it was fair to put the burden of creating a well rounded main character. The character doesn't speak at all so you don't feel much emotion from him outside of facial expressions. Emotional connections end up falling on the other characters who are exciting enough to keep things going. After all that happens, the ending isn't that satisfying either and it very open ended. If there will be other games in this series then that might make up for the weak storytelling. I mean- Astral Chain has one of the hardest final bosses that gamers have seen in recent years. What's really sad is that the ending on the other side of the boss isn't all that exciting.

Astral Chain is a beautiful game to look at as well as play. Just don't expect too much substance in story or much else for that matter. The game still is one of the best for the Switch Console nether less.

BURNOUT SYNDROMES - BURNOUT SYNDROMEZ Album Thoughts(J-rock)

Burnout Syndromes is a Japanese band that rose in popularity performing the theme songs for the Haikyuu anime based off of the manga created by Haruichi Furudate. They are more known for being associated with this series than any of their other music. The band has also done a theme song for the new season of the anime called Gintama.

Tracklist
01 FLY HIGH!!
02 Hikari Are
03 PHOENIX
04 Dream On!!
05 Good Morning World!
06 Hana Ichi Monme
07 High Score Girl
08 Nami Tachinu
09 Wagahai wa Neko de Aru
10 Hakusen Watari
11 Suugaku Shoujo Z
12 FLY HIGH!! -Spring Version- (Bonus Track)

Burnout SyndromeZ as an album feels more like a re-release to me than a new album. Fly High!! was on their last album as well as the other song for Haiku that was used for the show. I don't think that album did as well as they wanted to, so the band's label gave them a chance to make a new album that included all the songs from Haiku once again. We all know this Haikyuu thing is going to get milked dry just because of the popularity. I would have been a bigger fan had Burnout Syndromes released this album first. They literally came back with an album that supports the songs that everyone knows them for. The album before this one tried a bit too hard to experiment using sounds not connected to the Haikyuu Opening theme songs. Now, their music comes from more of a punk garage rock influence than a pop rock influence. Fly High also gets an acoustic version that brings a new love for the track as a whole. I feel songs like Dream On and Good Morning World fit along side the commercial tracks. Some of the more poppy tracks toward the end of the album don't derail the strong punch all the tracks create together. This album truly highlights what fans of Haikyuu want from Burnout Syndromes and I'm loving every bit.

Kazuumi has a good vocal range. He's a frontman than can actually hold a tune after all the band playing is said and done. You can hear a improvement in hitting his falsetto notes more stably. He also has a unattainable vibrato that can seem out of control when he holds long notes but this is what makes his voice fun to listen to.
